LOGLINE

Released early from prison for an unforgivable crime, ex-special forces agent Richard Gale, struggles to adapt to the world outside until a violent encounter with a dangerous man puts him on the run with a strange woman, her young daughter and a million dollars in cash in this character driven action film.

Logline

Executive Summary

Pops is a throwback to the 80’s action films that I grew up loving and watching repeatedly over and over on VHS tapes. Rambo: First Blood, Commando, Cobra, Roadhouse, Above the Law, Billy Jack etc.

Gritty, violent, over the top action and memorable one liners. Good ole days before CGI ----- just real stunts, real explosions and real people crashing thru "real" windows. There will be BLOOD. This isn’t Citizen Kane and it’s not trying to be.

At it's heart, this is the story of a father fighting to reunite with his son after years of abandonment and regret. And fight he does. We will be employing some of the industries top-notch stunt coordinators and fight men to choreograph elaborate fights and vehicle stunts. Think John Wick meets The Fast and Furious franchise.

Target audiences will be men 35-70 who are nostalgic for those badass, male driven, kick-ass, no prisoner type films.

The younger generation that is now so over-saturated with CGI laden films that they might as well be watching video games will be refreshed by this realistic portrayal of a true American badass.

The story of a mom struggling to give her daughter a better life will appeal to women of all ages as well as the reluctant love story that blossoms between our two main protagonists.

This is a touching, funny, heart-wrenching, brutal, sexy action film with a heart.

SYNOPSIS

The story begins on a country road where we find a a sheriff’s bus transporting new prison inmates. We meet Richard Gale, 50’s, hard-scrabbled and steely eyed. The bus pulls into Oklahoma City’s largest prison, “BIG MAC”.

The story jumps forward ten years and we find Richard, now nicknamed "Pops" by his fellow inmates, still in prison where he’s settled in nicely. Having found a community in prison, Pops is notified he will be getting out soon but he's unsure about facing the outside world again. But maybe he can finally have a relationship with his only son, Jeff.

At a cheap motel, Pops tries to settle into his new found freedom without much success. He meets with his probation officer, Alan Keith, and suggests they send him back to prison. Officer Keith tells him he needs to move on with his life and is there family he can call? Nope.

He slowly befriends a shy young Mexican woman, Maria, and her daughter, Emily, who are also staying at the motel. After a few nights of hearing violent altercations coming from Maria’s room, Pops finally decides to intervene and during an intense struggle ends up killing a dangerous drug cartel soldier with his own knife. Pops is set to go back to prison but Maria begs Pops for help and pulls two duffel bags from under a bed. Filled with drugs and money. She's into something deep.

Pops reluctantly agrees to helps Maria and Emily go on the run but it’s not long before a dangerous drug cartel and Pop’s probation officer, Alan Keith, are hunting them down. Pops' first stop is an old Military buddy named Ray. He helps out with a gun and a different car.

The three hit the road again and begin to bond on the road. Richard and Maria slowly open up to each other after years of building up walls of protection.

The cartel tracks Ray down with a tracking device hidden in some of the cash Richard gave him and after an intense shootout they torture him to death but he gives them nothing but a hard time.

Just when our protagonists finally feel they are safe and home free the trio are cornered and in a violent exchange Emily is kidnapped by the cartel and Maria is shot dead. Pops is taken as a hostage and all seems lost.

Chained to a wall in a dark warehouse, Pops is tortured and Emily threatened until Pops gives up the location of the money which he hid under Ray’s trailer. Emily is taken away and Pops is left for dead. But Pops summons the strength thru his rage to take out two men armed henchmen and free himself.

Pops returns to Ray’s to find his friend dead. He stocks up on weapons and begins his hunt of the men that took Emily.

His search leads him to cartel leader Juan Ortega’s mansion. In a daring stunt that will make Tom Cruise wet his pants, Pops drives a semi-truck into the front door while leaping from the hood and cannonballing into a second story window. A deadly game of cat and mouse ensues in a final epic and bloody battle until finally he finds and kills Juan, leaving him dead on his gold-plated toilet. And just when we think it's over we have our final dramatic fight between Pops and Mr. Don that ends with them flying of a roof into a pool. The police helicopter circles as Pops takes the last breath from Mr. Don, staring into his eyes as he holds the fucker under water. The police swarm the place and Emily and the rest of the women are safe. Pops lays poolside dying from his wounds as the white from the helicopter light fills his vision and he loses consciousness.

At a funeral we assume at first is for Pops we watch Emily place a rose on the casket and say her final goodbye to her mother, Maria.

No Pops isn't dead, instead he keeps a promise and sneaks some Mickey D's back into prison for his old friends. The local hero returns.

COMPARABLE FILMS

Financial Plan

  • This film is set in Oklahoma purposely to take advantage of their 37% tax incentive.

  • This is a tier 1 film with a budget of $4.5 million.

  • Initial funding will come from a combination of online Kickstarter campaigns, private donors and businesses.

  • After our initial run of film festivals is complete we will enter a limited theatre run where we can expect a gross of $1-2 million. With that momentum we then swing money back into advertising and a larger theatrical release where we can realistically expect a return of an additional $10-15 million.

  • Once we enter worldwide VOD markets we can expect returns of an additional $1 million annually. With an estimated gross return of $20 million in the first 5 years.

BUSINESS PLAN

Marketing Strategy

We will begin with making "Pops" a film festival darling. Submitting to all the top film festivals worldwide including Sundance, Cannes, SXSW, TIFF etc. Gathering top film festival official submissions and awards with the combination of a name actor and/or director will give us an easy road to finding distribution worldwide in multiple arenas including all VOD platforms.

Once we have the appropriate backing we will be doing an ad campaign aligned with a Father's Day opening. This will have two main points of attraction:

  1. The film is called "Pops" and much of the story involves a father fighting to get back into his son's life.

  2. Father's will want to see this for the nolstalgia aspect of a throwback action film while their age appropriate kids, that are now so over-saturated with CGI laden films that they might as well be watching video games, will be refreshed by this realistic portrayal of a true American badass.

Target audiences will be men 35-70 who love those badass, male driven, kick-ass, no prisoner type films. (Hint: That's most men.)

Likewise, the storyline of a Maria struggling to give her daughter a better life will appeal to women of all ages and the sweet, reluctant love story that blossoms between our two main protagonists is something everyone will cheer for.

We will be using all aspects of social media including Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and on that front we have a head start as the writer, Nick Gomez, already has a built in following with his WALKING DEAD fanbase.

For one promotional campaign we will have several trailers and posters made in a vintage style to mimic films from the 70's and 80's. Styled directly like films from past decades, ie . . . Billy Jack, Cobra and Commando.

This character is also built in a way that lends itself easily to multiple sequels down the road after the "Pops" brand is cemented, a la the Tom Berenger "SNIPER" series.

Born in Hawaii yet raised in a little trailer in the middle of "nowhere" Arizona, Nick quickly developed an elaborate imagination. Surrounded by nothing but miles of dirt and rocks and long before the iPhone, Nick began to create and film his own stories on the tiny tape recorder his family owned.

Nick has journeyed around the country quite a bit in search of work and adventure, including a memorable stop in New Orleans: His favorite American city. Ask about that tattoo.

Nick now lives in Los Angeles with two beautiful pups and when not acting or writing he spends his time playing music, woodworking in the garage and painting terrible abstract art.
